A homeowner checklist that protects your budget, comfort, and warranty
When choosing PVC windows, most homeowners focus on price and style. But the quality of the installation often matters even more. A poor fit, sloppy sealing, or unqualified work can wipe out energy savings and leave you with drafts, noise, and condensation. Use this checklist to ask the right questions before you sign anything.
1) Credentials and experience
Ask:
- “How long have you been installing PVC windows?”
- “Are your installers employed by your company or subcontractors?”
- “Do you have any certifications or training that match local building norms?”
Why it matters: experienced, stable crews make fewer mistakes, handle tricky openings better, and are easier to hold accountable if something needs adjustment later.
2) Product quality and technical specs
Ask:
- “Which PVC profile system do you use?” (brand, number of chambers, wall thickness/class)
- “What glazing options do you offer?” (double/triple, Low-E coating, argon, laminated/acoustic)
- “What is the U-value (or thermal rating) of the window unit?”
- “Is the hardware multi-point locking, and what brand is it?”
Quick guide: lower U-values generally mean better insulation. And if you’re near a busy street, laminated or acoustic glazing can make a noticeable difference.
3) Warranty, guarantees, and insurance
Ask:
- “Do you provide an installation warranty separate from the product warranty?”
- “How long is the product warranty and the installation warranty—and what exactly is covered?”
- “Is the warranty backed by insurance or another mechanism if your company stops operating?”
- “Are you insured for accidental damage during the job?”
Why it matters: many problems are installation-related (sealing, alignment), so you want coverage that doesn’t disappear the moment the last screw is tightened.
4) Work process and on-site guarantees
Ask:
- “How long will the installation take, and which rooms will be affected each day?”
- “How do you protect floors, furniture, and walls from dust and damage?”
- “Do you remove and dispose of old frames and debris?”
- “What installation method do you use—tapes/membranes, foam, sealant, flashing?”
- “How do you ensure drainage paths and weep holes remain open?”
Pro tip: ask what happens if they discover hidden issues (rot, uneven openings). A good installer has a clear plan - and doesn’t improvise with “more foam.”
5) Aesthetics and finishing details
Ask:
- “How do you finish the interior reveals/slopes?” (plaster, trim, casing)
- “Will I need repainting or redecoration after installation?”
- “Can you match colors to my façade or interior?” (white, wood-look, RAL colors)
- “What does the final joint line look like - will the sealant be visible?”
Why it matters: the best windows can still look cheap if finishing is rushed. Clean finishing is what makes the job feel “new-build” instead of “patched.”
6) Cost, payment terms, and transparency
Ask:
- “What is the total price including windows, hardware, installation, finishing, and disposal?”
- “Is the estimate free, and is the quote binding or indicative?”
- “What’s your deposit policy - and do you offer staged payments?”
- “What could change the price after you start?”
Insist on a written quote with a full breakdown, not a verbal number. If something is “included,” it should be listed.
7) After-sales support and service
Ask:
- “Do you provide after-sales service for adjustments, seals, and hardware?”
- “How quickly do you respond to warranty issues?”
- “Do you provide care instructions and ventilation guidance?”
- “Can you show recent projects or customer reviews?”
Best-case scenario: your installer offers a quick post-install check after a few weeks of use - when the home has “settled” and you’ve noticed real-life issues.
